Critical mass is a term used a lot in the corporate world today, but had actually first emerged with the atomic age.
After the first nuclear bomb was made, the nuclear physicists began explaining to the public of how the bomb actually worked.
They had reported that Uranium 235 was inside the shell and when it was mixed with TNT, it became unstable and imploded within the shell instead of exploding outside the shell like it was meant to.
When a leader wants to transform a large organization, sometimes they make the mistake of thinking that they can just stand up in front of everyone, make their claim, and think that everyone will buy in.
For the most part that almost never works and if it does it almost never lasts as the change that they wanted.
It's rare for leaders to broadcasts their ideas and get change instantly as well.
Instead a smart leader should use the idea of "critical mass".
A smart leader should realize that it'll probably take them time to make lasting changes so they should select a small group of important and influential people. Then as a leader they can spread their idea to those influential and important people to get them on board with their own idea over time.
Those key people will go help spread the message to their own people and their own groups, leading to a bigger audience over time.
As a result more people will hear about it and be more likely to believe the idea and it'll have the opportunity to leave a lasting change throughout time.
As a real life/biblical example, Jesus clearly represented the idea of critical mass. Jesus had his own 12 disciples that he would spread his own messages to, that would help get it out to others in the world.
We can see the lasting effect that it made as there is an estimated 2.2 billion Christians in the world that still try and follow and spread those same ideas and messages, that Jesus shared with his disciples.
Devotional Luke 9:1-2 Jesus called his twelve disciples together. He gave them power over all the bad spirits, and power to heal sick people. He sent them out to tell people about the kingdom of God and to heal sick people.
