CRUSADES

THE WAR FOR THE HOLY LAND

HOW IT STARTED

  • In1096-99 the first crusade started.
  • Pope urban ll waged war against the Muslims.
  • He said if anyone who fights in this war would be saved.
  • A man can sin whenever he wants but can still be saved.
  • This is how the first crusade started.

SECOND CRUSADES

  • It started in 1147-49.
  • The deal that pope made wanted knights to fight these wars.
  • But the Muslims where gaining ground at Jerusalem.
  • The Muslims and Turks joined forces against the Christians.
  • The second crusade was a failure though for many reasons.

THIRD CRUSADES

  • It started in 1189-92.
  • The knights captured Egypt.
  • In 1187 Saladin began a campaign against the crusaders.
  • His virtually destroyed the knights in the battle for Jerusalem.
  • The crusaders lost.

FOURTH CRUSADE

  • The fourth crusades was 1202-1204.
  • The crusader where supposed to invade Egypt to get to Jerusalem.
  • Instead sacked the Christian city Constantinople.
  • This was the capital of the Byzantine empire.
  • They didn't gain control of the holy land.

FIFTH CRUSADE

  • The fifth crusade took place in (1213-1221)
  • The crusaders wanted to reacquire Jerusalem.
  • Also the holy land by first conquering Ayyubid in Egypt.
  • German armies later joined the crusaders against the Muslims.
  • There was a major loss in the crusade armies in this crusade.

SIXTH CRUSADE

  • This crusade was in 1228 to 1229.
  • This crusade was the most successful since the first.
  • The Christians took control of the holy land and Jerusalem.
  • Fredrick II of Germany did the impossible and took the holy land.
  • The Christian control over Jerusalem only lasted fifteen years.

SEVENTH CRUSADE

  • The seventh crusade was in 1248-1254.
  • King Louis paid ransom for 800,000 bezants for his crusade.
  • He also had thousands of troops to go to the holy land.
  • His men where either killed In battle or capture.
  • The Muslims losses where light while Louis men where destroyed.

Eighth Crusade

  • This crusade happened in 1270-1271.
  • It was led by King Louis IX and persuaded to invade Tunis by his kin.
  • When he arrived in Tunis some of his men got sick and even he died.
  • Charles was now in charge and gained control of with trade routes.
  • Louis IX failed to capture Tunis.

NINTH CRUSADE

  • This was the last major crusade.
  • It took place in 1271-1272
  • This crusade had several impressive victories.
  • Edward bailbars led these victories.
  • This crusade did not really fail but Edward just withdraw.

HOW IT AFFECTED

  • After this war there was more trade routes.
  • Muslims traded in Europe with the Christians.
  • Peace was between Muslims and Christians.
  • There was also trade routes through Tunis in Africa.

HOW IT AFFECTED

  • They got and learned math systems.
  • They got writing paper and wheelbarrows.
  • Also mattresses, mirrors, and carpets.
  • This was a major success leading up to the renaissance.
  • There was major trade between these old rivals.
