Matt has arrived in Rotorua and he is staying with his grandparents. he arrives with his luggage and a homemade metal detector.

Matt has a new step grandad called Hone. he is a bus driver and he shows Matt around Rotorua.

Matt meets a boy next door called Jackson. Jackson is a wild child and really wants to be a part of a gang.

Hone is really worried about Jackson and he wants Matt to stay with Jackson and entertain him so he keeps out of trouble

Matt and Jackson find a skeleton and a locket buried underneath the dirt under a tree.

Jackson almost steals loppers because they are trying to cut the skeleton free from the tree roots. However, Matt goes back in and pays for them.
The police investigate the scene and find out the body is a man and that he died in the Tarawera eruption.

Matt meets Eve, An Australian girl. She helps Matt in the investigation. She finds out all about the skeleton and calls herself Sherlene Holmes.

Matt finds a strongbox and tells Jackson about it. Jackson went of and told the gang about it. So they opened the box.

Matt finds 9 sovereigns. A guy called the gawk came and stole the metal detector and the gold sovereigns.

Matt and Jackson chase the gawk on the bikes trying to get their stuff back, and at the end reclaim their belongings.
When they went to visit the museum , Matt notices that Jackson has become calmer and more responsible.

Eva and Matt argue about where the diamonds are because Matt thinks they are in Australia and Eve thinks they are somewhere in Rotorua.

Matt and Eve find the diamonds in the Ponga candle holder and decide not to tell anyone.

Ana Walker came to Matt's house and told Matt and Eve that they need to follow her because Jackson is in danger and she will show them where he is.

Skulla and the gang were waiting for them holding Jackson. They took Matt and Eve into the danger zone from the explosive craters and Skulla told them to go in with the metal detector and find them the diamonds.

When they were in the danger zone the craters exploded and Matt and Eve could hide behind the bushes just in time with Croke. Diz got killed and Jackson got burned and got blisters on his face. Skulla got brain damage and he had to go to hospital with everyone else except Croke because he escaped.

When Matt and Eve were out of the hospital they realized that the Ponga piece with the diamonds were GONE!! Croke came to the front door and Matt told him all about it and went to Ana Walkers house to get the piece back but she didn't know what it was because she just thought it looked cool.
