The Farm River

1968

The Farm River

  • The Farm River is located in East Haven CT.
  • The name Farm River was officially decided upon in 1968
  • From its northern reaches, the river flows southward into the town of East Haven.

  • Farm River is a south-flowing river located entirely within the U.S State of Connecticut.
  • The Farm River begins at fresh water then goes into salt water turning into long island sound.
  • When it rains hard The Farm River floods and causes people to have flooding issues.

Local wildlife

  • Snowy egrets
  • wide variety of gulls, ducks and blue heron

Hammonasset River

1920

Hammonasset river

  • Located in Madison, CT
  • Flows 21 miles into Clinton Harbor, starting as fresh water turning into salt water
  • Located on Algonquian Native American digging grounds
  • Flooding has been an issue in the past, due to heavy rains

  • Hammonasset has a state park
  • 19th state park, opened in July 1920
  • The park drew tourists from across North America

Local wildlife

  • State threatened species: Piping Plover and Least Tern
  • Special concern species: American Oyster Catcher
  • Several other bird species
  • Trout

Candlewood lake

1926

Candlewood Lake

  • Located in Fairfield and Litchfield counties of Western CT
  • Largest lake in CT and it is man made
  • Located on tribal land of a group of refugee Indians made up of several tribes
  • Refugee Indians sold the land to Connecticut settlers
  • Lake acts like a giant battery when power is in high demand

  • Built in 1926 and finished in 1928 with hydroelectric power facilities
  • Used for recreation all year long but mostly tourists in the summer months, some of the most expensive properties in CT are located along lake
  • Eelgrass and Eurasian Milfoil (invasive plant species) have grown so much in the lake that seeing underwater is only 5-20 feet

  • Trout
  • Wood Duck
