Physical Geography

  • Cuba is an archipelago of islands in the Caribbean Sea.
  • Except the mountains, the climate in Cuba is subtropical or temperate.
  • Cuba has many underground limestone caverns (such as Cuevas-de-Bellamar)
  • The annual rainfall averages about 52 inches.
  • The island lies in a region with violent tropical hurricanes in June-Nov.

  • Jamaica is south of Cuba, Mexico is to the west, and Florida to the north.
  • Coral reefs are close to the surface all around the entire island.
  • Inland Cuba has savannas, tropical plains, sugar cane, and plantations.
  • Average lowest temperature- 70   Average highest temperature- 81
  • Cuba is the biggest producer of nickel. They also have iron ore & copper

In Cuba they grow sugarcane, cassava, tropical fruits, tobacco, citrus fruits, coffee beans , rice, potatoes, beans, and livestock.

History

  • In 1492 Christopher Columbus claimed Cuba for Spain.
  • In 1526 Cuba began importing slaves from Africa.
  • In 1866 slavery was abolished.
  • In 1924 Gerado Machado established a dictatorship.
  • In 1959 Fidel Castro used a guerrilla army to make himself prime minister.

  • In 1959 Castro proclaimed a new Cuban  constitution.
  • In 1961 Cuba declared itself a communist state and an ally with the USSR
  • In 1961 the Cuban Missile Crisis and Bay of Pigs occured
  • In 1996 the U.S. embargo on Cuba was made permanent
  • In 2000 the sale of U.S. food and medicines to Cuba was approved.

  • The official language of Cuba is Spanish
  • They have a socialist republic government
  • For their money they use pesos
  • Cubans favorite sport is baseball 
  • There are white, mestizos, mulatto, and black people in Cuba

Cuba is know for its music. The main musical form is called son, it is a combination of upbeat rhythms with classical guitar.
