THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS

INTRODUCTION
During the Cold War, the US placed missiles in Turkey. This caused the USSR to put missiles in Cuba to threaten the US. This caused many diplomatic problems.

CAUSES OF THE CRISIS

  • US stopped purchasing sugar from Cuba in 1960.
  • The US and Cuba ended all diplomatic ties in 1961.
  • The US helped Cuban exiles attempted to invade the Bay of Pigs in 1961.
  • The USSR and Cuba gained diplomatic ties.
  • The United States placed missiles in Turkey.

EFFECTS OF CRISIS

  • A planned invasion was cancelled
  • Missile sites were shut down
  • The limited nuclear test ban treaty was created
  • CMC was considered most dangerous event for human race
  • Lesson learned: solve a problem through talking

IMPORTANCE
Relations that were severed are being rebuilt today. Americans may travel to Cuba for family, public, performances, education, and religious activities. 53 Cuban political prisoners were released.

The Cuban Missile Crisis caused the United States to tense up, not trust Cuba, and strengthen their defenses around the border to protect from future threats.

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • Cuban ports recieved nuclear weapons in July of 1962.
  • Construction started in August of 1962.
  • U2 planes took pictures and first meeting was held.
  • The US began to plan a military invasion and began a blockade.
  • On Oct. 22, JFK addressed the country about the crisis

RESOLUTION AND RESULT

  • 1st letter: Missiles removed if blockade removed
  • 2nd letter: Adding remove missiles from Turkey
  • 3rd letter: Accepted first letter's terms
  • The limited nuclear test ban treaty was signed
  • "No sense of triumph" after resolved (S5).
