Fundamental Attribution Error

Given the evidence, we tend to attribute internal factors to people’s behaviors. Nice simple picture of the person so we think we can predict their behaviors easily. Adaptive because it helps us find simple maps so we can act quickly.
Bad action=Bad person

(Fiske & Taylor 1991)

"It feels like society always thinks of me not as a person, but as the worst moment or period in my life."

Status characteristics theory

We all use socially shared categories to make assumptions about the competence of others. Categories include race, gender, gender presentation, socio-economic status, education, history with the criminal justice system, etc.

teaches us what is good, right, moral, & virtuous.”
