CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE LITERACY LESSON

PAIGE SHOEMAKER

STRATEGIES

  • Creating different dishes based on a culture allows students to get hands on with learning and be emerged in the culture
  • Exposes students to cultures of their peers in a save and comfortable environment
  • Sparks interest and discussion about culture through different dishes and foods

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT

  • The classroom has 16 students and they all come from different backgrounds having a smaller environment makes discussing the topic of culture easier and less uncomfortable.
  • The students in the classroom move around a lot and this is a good way for students to show who they are to their peers.

Untitled Slide

  • Students gain perspectives through discussion about food and dishes as well as being able to taste the different foods for the cultures of other students in the classroom
  • Students will have opportunities to research in depth about cultures and foods and talk to other students from that culture in order to create an authentic dish to share with the class
