WHAT IS DIALECT?

Dialect is a variety of a language. It can imply the region where a certain person lives and possibly their social status. Along with this, dialects are groups of a much larger and more common language in a country with slight differences in pronunciation, spelling, and pitch/tone.

LIST OF REGIONAL CHINESE DIALECTS:

  • Putonghua (Mandarin)
  • Gan/Kan
  • Xiang
  • Yue (Cantonese)
  • Hakka (Keija)
  • Min (Fujanese)
  • Wu (Shanghainese)

ADDED DIALECT GROUPS:

  • Jin
  • Hui
  • Pinghua

Hearth of Chinese Dialects

There is no exact origin of the many Chinese dialects in China. The diverse dialects were just simply spoken in their respected regions and it spread through the next couple of generations.
