Self determination is the concept that ethnicities have the right to govern themselves. The term can be found on pg. 217 in Chapter 7:Ethnicity of the AP Human Geo book.

Domestic Report: The focus of the article is the response to Duane Champagne’s article of self-determination in reference to indigenous people of the United States and where it applies. Champagne’s article basically says that Indigenous People do not want to and are not ready to become a nation state but simply dislike the fact that the state has power over them that they cannot control. His article also talks about The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people, which is a standard that was adopted in 2007 to protect the indigenous people of the world. Steven Newcomb on the other hand completely disagrees with Champagne on his views and feels that Champagne is just trying to stick to the “status quo”. The writer of the article personally believes that as an indigenous person herself that there would be more self-determination projects and that it is something that will always be an issue and is inevitable in the future.

Foreign Report : Spain's government on Tuesday (Nov 11) rejected Catalonia's demands for self-determination after more than two million people took part in a symbolic vote on independence for the region. Catalonia has wanted to secede from Spain as its own independent nation but Spain’s government refuses to allow it saying that, "The right to self-determination ... is not possible, neither under our constitution nor in any of the other democracies around us," Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told parliament. The article says that one of the reasons is because Catalonia counts for a fifth of Spain’s economy. Even though 1.86 million people voted for independence, Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy fiercely opposed the symbolic vote and has not reacted since the polls.

How It All Relates: These articles relate to Human Geography because self-determination coincides closely with culture and the ethnicities within them. The reasons for self-determination are that of preservation and enhancement of the distinctive cultural characteristics that ethnicities have within their respective culture. They feel that the only way to keep themselves unique and their culture alive is to govern themselves. The articles give prime examples of it and show us how important it is to that certain cultural group or ethnicity.
