Variation

Cuttlefish vary in sizes and weights depending on what breed of cuttlefish they are. (e.g: the Australian Giant Cuttlefish is about 10 kg larger than the Dwarf Cuttlefish.)

Inheritance

Cephalopods: Any kind of marine mollusks of the class Cephalopoda, such as the octopus and squid, having a large head, large eyes, prehensile tentacles, and, in most species, an ink sac containing a dark fluid used for protection or defense.

Selection Pressure

Cuttlefish's ancestors were first found in the late Cambrian Period. In this time, the Earth was mostly water that was constantly decreasing in temperature. Thus, more species were dying out, making food more scarce, so caphalopods became one of the ideal sources of prey for larger animals.

Cuttlefish are now prey to predators such as: sharks, larger fish, and other larger breeds of cuttlefish.

Time

It took cuttlefish years to evolve to their current state.

Adaptions

Cuttlefish have evolved the ability avoid being eaten.

They have the ability to change the color and shape of their skin to camouflage themselves from predators and their own prey.

tHEY ALSO ADAPTED:

  • Propulsion
  • Fast Tongue
  • Cuttlebone
  • Beak and Tentacles
  • Good Eyesight
