WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING?

  • Cyberbullying is a form of harassment
  • Cyberbullying takes place with the use of electronics, social media sites, text messaging and the Internet
  • It was first recognized in 1999.

HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

  • Cyberbullying is harassment focused mainly on young adults
  • Usually occurs either anonymously or directly with the use of technology
  • It also occurs when a person/group decides to harass someone.

WHAT WEBSITE/APPS DOES IT MOSTLY OCCUR ON?

  • The three most popular social media apps used for Cyberbullying are:
  • Instagram, Ask.fm, and Facebook.
  • List three apps you have heard of or saw.

EFFECTS OF CYBERBULLYING ON BULLY AND BULLIED?

  • Bullies: alcohol or drug abuse, fights, vandalism, early sexual activity, criminal convictions, abusive behavior
  • Bullied: depression, anxiety, change in sleep or eating habits, loss of interest, health complaints, decrease in academic achievements

WHY IS IMPACT SOMETIMES WORSE THAN FACE-TO-FACE BULLYING?

  • Studies show Cyberbullying makes teens feel socially anxious, lonely, frustrated, sad and helpless
  • People who blame themselves are more likely to ruminate
  • Mainly causes young adults to feel socially vulnerable because of how viral it can become

HOW TO PREVENT/AVOID?

  • Those who face Cyberbullying are likely to face depression or suicide
  • No reaction = bully will move on
  • Talk to your parent or a trusted adult.
  • Block the bully on all social media accounts.

SUPPORT GROUPS AND HELPLINES

  • STOMP Out Bullying!, Crisis Call Center, National Suicide Hotline
  • Support groups are a great way to talk about your feelings.

  • Criminal harassment
  • Unauthorized use of a computer
  • Identity fraud
  • "Prank" calling
  • False messages
  • Cyberbullies could face up to two years in prison.

STATISTICS

  • 7 out of 10 people are victims of Cyberbullying
  • Cyberbullying lowers teen self esteem by 70%
  • 27% of people report Cyberbullying, while 95% of people see bullying on social media and do nothing.
  • One million children have been harassed or threatened on Facebook during the past year
  • 1 in 6 parents actually know about their child being a victim to Cyberbullying
