PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CYCLONE HITS VANUATU

BY RYAN RITCHIE

WHAT IS THIS?

  • A category 5 cyclone hit Vanuatu
  • Winds reach up to 145 MPH
  • Waves reach up to 26 ft
  • Damaged 90% of the country’s capital

What’s the difference between cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons? There is no difference. It depends where the storm is located. A cyclone is located on the South Pacific or Indian Oceans. A hurricane is located in the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Ocean. A typhoon is also located in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.

SOME MORE INFORMATION ON THE CYCLONE

  • The cyclone’s name is cyclone Harold
  • On April 6th, 2020, the cyclone hit Vanuatu
  • The cyclone lasted in Vanuatu to April 11th, 2020
  • The cyclone also hit Fiji, a country close to Vanuatu.

IN RESPONSE TO THIS CYCLONE...

  • Other countries have donated money
  • The construction companies will earn lots of money
  • Have to get business, houses, and homes repaired—even health care systems
  • Lots of people devastated

The lenses I chose were the Civic, Geographic, and Economic lenses.

CIVIC LENS

  • Involves government
  • The pressure and spotlight is on the government
  • Government already has to deal with coronavirus

GEOGRAPHICAL

  • Vanuatu is an island
  • Islands are vulnerable to cyclones
  • Hard to get help because water is surrounding the island

ECONOMIC

  • Costs money to repair
  • Construction companies benefit from this—having to repair a lot

WHY DID I CHOSE TO WRITE ABOUT THIS?

  • I have always been fascinated with natural disasters
  • It is something other that the coronavirus
  • I thought it would be interesting to see how Vanuatu reacted—in the middle of a global pandemic

WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT THIS?

  • Because it affects the whole world
  • People are losing a lot of things—health care systems, business
  • In some cases, people need to have their business to pay mortgage or rent
  • These folks are going through especially rough times

WHY IS THIS NEWSWORTHY?

  • It has a chain reaction and it affects the whole world
