Pathfinder tells the story of a boy named Rigg, who has spent all 13 years of his life growing up with his mysterious Father in remote woods as a trader. Rigg is special, in that he is able to see thin paths in the air of where people used to be. When Rigg is chased off from the village nearby after his Father's death, Rigg must figure out who he actually is. The story also follows the tale of Ram, the boy who is charged with guiding a ship full of humanoid robots to inhabit a new planet.

"I'm pinned under the tree" said father
Rigg cried out and took a step toward the tree
"Stop!" cried Father "You cannot move it because I have been pierced by two branches, completely through my belly."
Rigg cried out, imagining the pain of it, feeling his own fear at Father's injury. Father was never hurt. Father never even got sick
"Listen now Rigg and don't waste what life I have left on any kind of argument"
"I won't argue" Rigg said
"You must make your most solemn promise that you will not come look at me, now while I'm alive or later after I'm dead. I don't want you to have this terrible image in your head."
....
"I can't believe you didn't argue with me right then" said Father.
"I did" said Rigg "You just didn't hear me"

Protagonists

  • Rigg: More dynamic than most, think of him like Ender Wiggin,
  • has the ability to see people's trails of past placement. Quick thinker,
  • expert survivalist, and incredible political debater.
  • Umbo: Rigg's best friend, and his main companion on his journey. Has the
  • ability to slow down time in a small space for a small time, continuously.

Protagonists Continued

  • Ram Odin: The 15 year old pilot of a ship full of expendables,
  • or humanoid robots tasked with helping him along his journey.
  • Helping him in ways like deciding whether to jump through a rip in time.
  • Loaf: A simple inn owner who helps Rigg and Umbo survive the harsh world
  • they are so unused to.

Antagonists

  • General Citizen: The evil government worker who
  • had made it his goal to kill the entire royal family, and Rigg.
  • Queen Hagia: The rightful, yet uncrowned Queen of the land
  • within the wall. Driven mad by power, seeks to kill off all
  • of the royal-blooded, even her own family.

I connected with this book though a personal experience I believe is common in all humans, which Rigg very much is. Every human, sometimes deep down, just knows there is something special about them; in a good way. A separating factor that only they possess. In this novel Rigg does a superb job of believing in himself and his ability, and using it to his own amazing advantage.

The theme of this book, as I see it, is to trust yourself. Throughout the book, the misguided protagonists and antagonists are constantly trying to influence the thoughts of Rigg. Yet through the teaching of the Wandering Man, better known as Father, Rigg is able to never stray from what he knows firmly as right and wrong.
