CYRENES' IMPORTANCE

  • founded in 4th Century BC by The Greeks of Thera
  • One of the principle cities in the Hellenic world
  • Later romanized and remained a great capital
  • Earthquake in 365 AD Later destroyed it

  • Founded by Greeks of Thera and guided by Battos
  • Became a major trading centre
  • First ruled by the Battiadae dynasty from 430-331 BC
  • Kingdom was then replaced with a democratic regime
  • Change in government led to the submission to Alexander the Great

  • Cyrene was established as a roman province in 74 AD
  • shared a lot of it's fortunes with the main empire
  • so it never ceased to play a preponderant role in the mediterranean world.
