Cystic fibrosis is a disease that causes the body to make thick, sticky mucus
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by mutations (changes) in a gene on chromosome 7.
There still is no cure for cystic fibrosis (CF), but treatments have improved greatly in recent years. The goal of CF treatment are to: Loosen and remove the thick, sticky mucus from your lungs.
It is not possible to accurately predict how long a person who has CF will live.
In the 1950s, children with CF were not expected to live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, approximately half of all people with CF in the United States are 18 years or older.
