FACTS

  • D-Day happened on June 6th 1944
  • It took place on the beaches of Normandy, France
  • The Allied powers (Great Britian, Canada, U.S. and France) against Nazi Germany.

The Allied Powers had to attack Germany on French soil because Germany had invaded France and kept taking more and more land. They had to win back France in order to win the war.

DETAILS

  • Around 156,000 Allied troops fought.
  • Hitler was asleep when the Allies first invaded and nobody wanted to wake him.
  • The attack was originally planned for May 1st and then June 5th but was delayed because of bad weather.

The Allied powers won the battle. They killed or wounded at least 200,000 men. More than 53,000 allied soldiers were killed.

This battle eventually led to the liberation of France and was a major turning point in the war. It was one of the main reasons the Allies won the war.
