DALLAS WORLD AQUARIUM

ORNATE HORNED FROG

  • Ceratophrys ornata
  • Eats large insects, small vertebrates, lizards, mice, earthworms and cockroaches
  • Has vomerine teeth and teeth on the outside of the jaw to eat
  • Leafy, muddy rainforests in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay
  • Known as "mouth with legs" because its mouth is the size of its body

ORNATE HORNED FROG

  • This frog burrows itself under the dirt to camouflage itself against predators
  • Stable status: not legally protected

MOON JELLYFISH

  • Aurelia aurita
  • Filter feeders, larval brine shrimp, zooplankton
  • Contain photo-receptive cells around edge of bell to help recognize light v. dark
  • Found in warm, tropical waters by the coast lines
  • As the oxygen rate in the water goes down, so does its respiratory rate

MOON JELLYFISH

  • These jellyfish swam upside down and away from each other in their tank
  • Stable status: can survive in polluted and poor oxygenated areas

SHORT TAILED LEAF NOSED BAT

  • Carollia perspicillata
  • Smaller fruits with seeds, bananas, figs, guava, plantain, pollen, insects
  • Ultra sonic hearing and a keen sense of smell
  • Hollow trees, tunnels, caves and deciduous forests of Central and S. America
  • 70% of the worlds flowers are pollenated by bats

SHORT TAILED LEAF NOSED BAT

  • All of the bats in the exhibit huddled together when they hung upside down
  • Stable status: common and widespread in their native areas
