  • That is and was is the natural way of the world)
  • Dao de jing- philosophy book

DAOISM

  • Dao directly means path. It might suggest a Devine element
  • Shen Daoism- negates the social and natural days
  • Practice intentional stoicism, deterministic (corollary dao)
  • confucian dao interpretation=everyone follows same dao (stoicism)
  • plurulism/zhuangzi dao= indidual dao created through practice

DAOISM

  • Pre-Laozi (Confucian Mohists)
  • Laozi identifies that dao cannot be describe in words
  • (Dao must be constant path, words are not constant)
  • what does this imply about daoist epistemelogical belief?
  • inadequate language, skepticism, nihilism, (no) (justifies stoicism)

DISCUSSION

  • How would Daoists live in the Cultural Revolution? (socially)
  • Knowing that Daoism emphasizes individual withdrawl, would
  • it work in a collectivist society? (Communisn, political)
  • They deny social pressures which interfere with the natural way...
  • how would that work esthetically? (individualism in art/lit)

  • How did the time periods of each of the novellas

  • How does individuality relate to Daoism?
  • Can we ever be void of socio-political influence, how?
  • (try not to use Thoreau as example ^)

Discussion

  • manifest itself through his writing? exmamples

  • What evidence is there of that in the book?
