Dark Romantics Literature took place during the civil war in the eighteen hundreds

This type of writing was popularly known as a sub-genre of the larger Romantic Movement.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DARK ROMANTICS

  • There is a focus on tragedy
  • Pays attention to the mysteries in life
  • Shows a belief in sin and evil
  • Honors human nature and its struggles
  • Is dark and creepy literature

Near the end of the Dark Romantics period the civil war took place. The war added to the evil and sin everyone believed in.

WHAT CAUSED THEM TO WRITE

  • Hawthornes father died from yellow fever when he was only four.
  • Melville fell ill to scarlet fever and permanantly impaired his vision.
  • Poes father left the family early on and a year later, Poes mother died.
