Who Is Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was a English naturalist known for his evolutionary theory.

What Is He Given Credit For?
Darwin provided a lot more data and logic to both evolution and natural selection than anyone else in the 19th century. His theory is Something that could not be simply dismissed. His many books provided thorough, detailed, and compelling arguments for natural selection and evolution.

Darwin's Voyage?
Charles Darwin went with Captain Robert Fitzroy as a travel companion and naturalist on the HMS Beagle. His book the Voyage of the Beagle is a story of his worldwide journey.
Starting from England for a five year trip. After observing the coasts of South America, the ship stopped over in the Galapagos Islands.
Darwin noted that the unique creatures were kinda the same from island to island, but perfectly adapted to their environments.

His Observations?
1) He found rocks containing fossil sea shells. this suggested that continents and oceans had changed majorly over time and still change in dramatic ways.

2) He visited rock ledges that had once been beaches. This suggested that slow, steady processes also change Earth’s surface.
#
3) He dug up fossils of gigantic extinct mammals. This suggested that rare animals looked very different in the past.

Contributions

  • He changed the world from being seen as static to changing.
  • Darwin refuted cosmic teleology
  • He refuted catastrophism

What Is Natural Selection?

Natural Selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype. It is a key mechanism of evolution, with the change in heritable traits of a population over time.
