Her Childhood

  • Born April 14, 1866, in Feeding Hills, Agawam, Massachusetts
  • She had one brother named James (a.k.a. Jimmie)
  • Her family came to the U.S. From Ireland because of Great Famine

Education

  • She went to Perkins School for the blind in Boston
  • Graduated at age 20 as the Valedictorian
  • She was the first blind and deaf person to be educated at Perkins

Career

  • She worked with Helen Keller on March 3, 1887
  • She taught Helen Keller how to speak
  • She taught Helen Keller 575 words in 6 months

Personal Life

  • She married John Albert Macy in 1905
  • They divorced in 1920
  • She never remarried

Awards

  • Honorary Fellowships- Educational Institute of Scotland
  • Honorary Degree- Temple University
  • Honorary Degree- Harvard University

Death

  • She was seriously visually impared for most of her life
  • On October 15, 1936, she fell into a coma
  • She died 5 days later
