PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DECIDUOUS FOREST

BY: DAWSON DAVID, MADISON HESS, ALEKSANDER THOMAS, AND MASON BARNHART

DESCRIPTION

  • Located between the poles
  • Mid-latitude location creates warm and cold summers.
  • Wildlife: Insects to squirrels to Bears
  • Pretty lush forests in the summer and the trees shed in the winter.
  • Locations: Eastern U.S, southeastern Mexico, most of Europe, West Asia, West Africa, and the coasts of Australia

THE DECIDUOUS FOREST IS BASICSLLY LOCATED ALL OVER EXCEPT ANTARCTICA.

CLIMATE

  • Warm summers, cold winters.
  • 30-60 inches of rain per year.
  • Fertile soil caused by the rain.
  • This is all caused by the mid-latitude location of the deciduous forest, and this causes moist humid air. This then brings lots of good rain for the plants and the forest.

A CLIMOGRAPH OF THE DECIDUOUS FOREST

TOPOGRAPHY

  • Soil- Dirt soil, that is rich from leaves that were shed. Rivers- lots of rivers that are medium sized length and shallow but some are deep like the Ohio river is and it also feeds into the Mississippi . Canals- Lots of man made long canals that lead into the Great Lakes. Hills and Valleys- Lots of tall grassy hills that lead to deep low valleys like the town Apple Valley.

SOME HILLS, VALLEYS, AND STREAMS OF THE DECIDUOUS FOREST

PLANT ADAPTATIONS

  • Most typical plants:
  • Oak tree- Tall long trees with lots of big branches and a big trunk.
  • Hickory Tree- Long tall trees with rough bark and clumps of leaves.
  • Lady Ferns- Medium sized to long green leaves with different rows of smaller green leaves.

OAK TREE: HAS LIGHTWEIGHT LEAVES SO IT COLLECTS MORE SUN FOR FOOD.

PLANT ADAPTATIONS

HICKORY TREE: SHEDS LEAVES TO CUT OFF WATER LOSS

PLANT ADAPTATIONS

LADY FERN: GROW IN CLUMPS TO REPRODUCE EASIER

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

  • Most typical animals:
  • Bears- Big furry, fat, and strong/mean animals.
  • Squirrels- Small furry animals, with bushy tails and fur.
  • Geese- Kinda big birds with long beams, and skin that's light brown, white, and black.

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

BEARS: BEARS HIBERNATE TO GET AWAY FROM THE COLD WINTERS AND THE FOOD SHORTAGE.

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

SQUIRRELS: COLLECT AS MUCH NUTS AS THEY CAN BEOFRE WINTER TO HELP THEM STAY IN THEIR TREE..

ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS

GEESE: THEY MIGRATE SOUTH TO AVOID THE COLD WINTER TO REPRODUCE IN THE WARMER AREA

HUMAN IMPACT

  • We use the land for roads, housing, farms, etc.
  • We have affected the biome by creating these public projects and cutting down trees which killed many animals and plants and this took away homes for animals.
  • Humans are adding more species to creat more biodiversity so more species will grow and be produced by reproduction.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE DECIDUOUS FOREST

  • Most insects can't survive the winter so the lay lots of eggs right before they die. Most trees contain sap that basically act like antifreeze and protect the roots from freezing. In the deciduous forest elk and bison are on the brink of extinction. That's why you don't see a lot of them.
