THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

WHEN

  • The Declaration of Independence was signed on the 4th of July 1776

WHERE

  • It was signed in Independence hall in the Assembly room

THIS IS WHAT THE ASSEMBLY ROOM WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE

PEOPLE WHO SIGNED IT

  • A total of 56 people signed the Declaration
  • Two signers became future presidents, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams
  • The oldest person to sign it was Benjamin Franklin
  • The youngest was Edward Rutledge

  • As you can see John Hancock signed it the largest
  • His signature is nearly 5 inches long

THE DECLARATION COMMITTEE

  • Five people were chosen to draft the declaration
  • These five people were John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut.
  • They were known as "The committee of five"

DRAFTING

  • The Committee of Five started drafting the declaration on June 11, 1776
  • They Finished The draft July 4th, 1776
  • Then it was signed on that day

PURPOSE

  • The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to show why and how they are separating themselves from Great Britain
  • Also to show they could engage in war with Britain

OTHER PURPOSES

  • Other purposes are to state that they can trade the way they liked and could create their own laws

WHERE IS IT NOW

  • It is now held at the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.
