• Pope Boniface VIII wanted more power but King Philip IV disagreed
• Boniface tried taxing the people more
• Used ex communication as a threat so people would pay these taxes

THE DECLINE CONTINUED

• Had a line of French pope's that tried to move Avingnon instead of Rome
• Cardinal's and Pope's living a life of luxury; highly judged by the people
• 113 out of 134 of the cardinals were French

THE GREAT SCHISM

• Gregory XI moved back to Rome because of the popularity decline of the pope
• The citizens threatened the cardinals because they did not want another French pope
• The citizens wanted a Italian or Roman pope

THE GREAT SCHISM CONTINUED

• There were two sides in this event
• One side was France, Spain, Scotland, and southern Italy who supported clement VII
• The other side was England , Germany, Scandinavia, and most of Italy who support Pope Urban VI
