DURING THE CIVIL WAR

HOW MANY DEFENSES WERE THERE PROTECTING THE CITY???

  • Just in Washington, D.C. alone there was 68 enclosed forts
  • With 807 mounted cannons, and 93 mortars, 93 unarmed
  • Batteries with 401 emplacements for field guns and
  • 20 miles of rifle trenches plus 3 blockhouses.

ALSO INCULDING...

  • There was also miles of military roads,
  • A telegraphic communication system and
  • Supporting infrastructure - including
  • Headquarters buildings, storehouses,
  • And construction camps.

THE DEFENSIVE PLAN WAS CREATED BY

  • Major General John G. Bernard
  • A West Point graduate
  • Developed a connected system of fortifications occupying
  • Every prominent point around Washington.

WHAT IMPACT DID THIS HAVE TODAY?

  • Now, the forts are national parks for
  • Citizens to visit and learn more about the
  • Civil war.
