DEFORESTATION

THE DESTRUCTION OF FORESTS ON A MASSIVE SCALE

WHAT IS DEFORESTATION

  • the clearance of forests for other uses
  • the biggest driver of deforestation is agriculture
  • 31% of the earths surface is covered in forests
  • approx. 46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year

WHY IS DEFORESTATION A PROBLEM

  • tropical rainforests are one of the main victims of deforestation
  • 4/5 of all plant species and nearly half of all animal species are located here
  • 17% of the Amazon has already been cut down

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN

  • the quickest solution to deforestation is to stop cutting down trees
  • carefully manage forest resources by eliminating clear-cutting
  • enough new trees need to be planted to replace ones that have been cut
  • more areas need to be protected
