WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

  • The decline of mental ability
  • Interferes with everyday life
  • Not a specific disease
  • the various symptoms of declining mental health
  • Despite common belief, dementia is NOT part of normal aging

TYPES OF DEMENTIA

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

  • Most common form of dementia
  • 60% of dementia cases
  • Deals with memory loss
  • 50% of people over 80 will develop Alzheimer's

VASCULAR DEMENTIA

  • Vascular dementia
  • Also called post-stroke dementia
  • Caused by reduced blood flow to the brain
  • Affects the person mentally (thinking and memory) and physically

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Impairs areas like:
  • Memory
  • Communication
  • Ability to focus
  • Visually

HOW IS IT CAUSED?

  • Damage caused to brain cells
  • Difficult to preform tasks
  • Genetics play a role
  • Linked to chromosome 17

IS THERE A CURE?

  • Most forms of dementia don't have a cure
  • Prescribed drugs can help improve symptoms
