DEPENDENT PERSONALITY DISORDER(DPD)

CAUSES

• A strict or overprotective parent can lead to the development of DPD

SYMPTOMS

• Inability to make decisions, even everyday decisions without the advice and reassurance of others.
• Over sensitivity to criticism
• Intense fear of abandonment
• Willingness to tolerate mistreatment from others

TREATMENT

• Psychotherapy is the main treatment for DPD
• Medication can be used to treat people with DPD that also suffer from depression or anxiety. The medication must be carefully monitored because the person will become dependent on the medication.

COMPLICATIONS

• People with DPD are at risk of depression, anxiety, phobias and substance abuse.
