PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Depressants are drugs and/or alcohol that effects the central nervous system and dulls the senses of the body. These drugs come in multicolored tablets and capsules or in liquid form.
STREET NAMES:
- Amyl Nitrite - Poppers, Snappers
- Barbiturates - Barbs, Blue Devils, Jackets, Butyl
- Nitrite - Bolt, Bullet, Climax, Locker Room, Rush
- Ethyl alcohol-vodka, bourbon, beer, wine,
POSITIVE+
- Calm nerves
- Relax muscles
- Stopping panic attacks
- Sedatives
- Alleviate Pain
To numb pain during medical procedures such as dental work.
NEGATIVE-
- Drowsiness
- Slow pulse and breathing
- Slurred speech
- Lowered blood pressure
- Impaired coordination and thinking
Higher doses can cause impairment of memory, judgment and coordination, irritability, paranoia, and suicidal thoughts.
Using sedatives (drugs used to calm or soothe) and tranquilizers with other substances, particularly alcohol, can slow breathing and the heart rate and even lead to death.
Tranquilizers - Equanil, Librium, Miltown, Serax, Tranxene Valium
Alcohol-Dulls the senses. Causes slower respond time, less feeling ect.
'Laughing Gas'-Nitrous oxide.When inhaled it can make people feel slowed down and relaxed.
Teens can rapidly develop dependence on and tolerance to depressants, meaning you need more and more of them to feel and function normally. This makes them unsafe, increasing the risk of coma or death.
