DESCRIPTIVE IMAGERY

Descriptive imagery is an authors use of vivid and descriptive language to add depth to their writing. It is used to help the reader understand the writing better.

"I held out my hand and he gripped it like a vice"
Stevenson (19)
This shows that the man gripped the boy with such a strong grip it was like a parasite. This is a descriptive image because it can create a mental image of a blind man gripping a child and pulling himself close to the kid.

"I slept like a log up hill and down dale and was finally awakened by a punch to the ribs"
Stevenson(45)
This puts a mental image of a boy sleeping in a carriage. It also puts a physical image of a man punching a boy in the ribs to wake him up.

Descriptive imagery adds fun to a story. Without it, all stories would be bland and unrelatable. There would be no emotion in a story.

Descriptive imagery can also help to find a characters personality. The way they act, how they see things, and what they feel are all examples of descriptive imagery.
