Design technologies is one of two subjects in the Australian Curriculum. It differs from the ICT general CApability because it is about creating the technology, not just being a good end user of the technology. Design Technology has at it's centrepiece - Design thinking.

Student generated problem - How can we solve the problem of the acanthus overtaking our rainbow garden?
Here is a student generated problem integrating the Digital Technologies subject. Students identified that the acanthus in their garden were taking over. the teachers use this teachable moment to introduce BeeBots. Students were asked - How could the BeeBot be modified to help solve this problem. they built a model of the garden and programmed the Bee bot to visit the Acanthus. THey redesigned the beebot to suit their ideas. They didn't actually make the design. the idea was to consider the thinking involved. Student designs included the following.

On the surface - add scissors and a camera. Programme in photos of the flowers so the beebot avoids cutting the flowers and only cuts the Acanthus.

Add cameras. Burrow underground to take photos of the root system - note wheels for digging. Remove roots with wheels.

Add a wings to create a drone with a camera, remove the plants that are the problem with the claw.
3D Printing
Visualise, produce and protoype.
3D Printing can bring student designs to life and have real possibilities for testing.
