HOW DID SLAVES HELP THE SOUTH?

  • Raised crops
  • Did farm work
  • Let white men fight
  • Build and cook for the army

  • Property seized from the enemy
  • Escaped slaves became this
  • Worked for the Union Army

THEY REALLY WANTED TO FIGHT

  • They believed in America
  • They knew that fighting men could never be viewed as slaves
  • They knew the was about slavery
  • First AA soldiers fought for Union in MO
  • Many legions formed

54TH MASSACHUSETTS

  • First organized AA regiment
  • Led by a white colonel
  • Robert Shaw
  • Led an attack on Ft Wagner
  • No one doubted their abilities any more

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF CAUGHT?

  • Treated differently
  • Captured white officers of black soldiers would be executed
  • Captured black soldiers would be sold into slavery.
  • By end of war 180,000 volunteered
