Developing Assessments & Rubrics

What do we need to know?
Start with standards/benchmarks
Identify knowledge & skills students should acquire
Develop assessments & items
Develop rubrics
Ensure all standards are met
Questions & Discussion

Standards & Benchmarks

Always the starting point
Begin by identifying and grouping specific standards & benchmarks--remember, terminology here is dependent on context but it is always focused on what do you need students to know and be able to do? (curriculum theory essential question)
Group together those that are similar in content or application--this is how you can create interdisciplinary units
Consider aligning learning activities with multiple standards--it is not a 1:1 ratio here. One learning activity may cover multiple standards in part, OR, it may take several learning activities to master a standard.

What knowledge & skills are required

...in order to meet that benchmark?
From particular standards, define measurable knowledge and skill that students must demonstrate
In addition to recall, consider measures of application and transfer
Skill development should occur over time – multiple measurement points

Develop Assessments & Items

Assessments are NOT always = grades
Consider/review different types of assessments
Assessments may not always be the same as assignments/grades
Develop observable and measurable outcomes—and do not measure more than you want to use
Consider using Bloom’s taxonomy

Bloom's Taxonomy

Or other higher order thinking skills
Cognitive domain
Knowledge: declarative, procedural, conditional, etc.
Comprehension – understanding
Application – use in a problem or project
Skills - Critical thinking: Analysis
Synthesis
Evaluation
Affective domain
Psychomotor domain

Evaluating Assessment Items

Criteria to Use
Cognitive complexity
Content quality
Meaningfulness
Language appropriateness
Transfer & generalizability
Fairness
Reliability
Consequences

Develop Items

Rubrics, Checklists, Essays, Performance Items, Tests
Objective test items
True/false
Matching
Multiple choice
Using data/graphs
Completion
Essay items
Performance items

Circle back~

All standards met?  Gaps?  Overlaps?
Return to standards & benchmarks and ensure that assessments are aligned
Cross check standards against objectives and measurements
Analysis of data gathered looking for gaps or items that indicate error

Consider...

Alignment?  Measurement?  Clarity?
Are standards aligned with objectives and assessment items?
Are assessments accurately measuring standards?
Are evaluation rubrics clear and concise for students?
