  • After the defeat in the war, experienced many governments
  • Transitioned from monarchy to republic to caudillo rule
  • A liberal reform was created, to reshape Mexican society
  • Liberal reform led by President Benito Juárez

  • Liberal reform created after defeat in Mexican American War
  • 1850s: La reforma was established and run by the president
  • Aimed to limit power of military & Roman Catholic church
  • Aimed to give citizens means to support themselves
  • Aimed to give citizens power to participate in political affairs

LA REFORMA(CONT)

  • Challenged conservative views of Mexican society
  • Opposed political, social, and economic reforms
  • Caused tension in Mexico- country divided
  • Mexico was leaning towards civil war

CONSTITUTION OF 1857

  • Implemented ideals of La Reforma
  • Took away many rights of priests & military elites
  • Allowed for the confiscation of church properties
  • Enforced land redistribution and broadened ownership
  • Improved living conditions overall

MEXICAN REVOLUTION

  • From 1911 to 1920
  • Broke out when dictator Pofirio Diaz was overthrown
  • Lower classes followed rebels Zapata and Villa
  • Armed forces of Zapata and Villa had public support
  • Forces were unable to capture Mexico's major cities

  • Revolution ended when Zapata died and gov regained control
  • Constitution provided many opportunities for citizens to improve lives
