CONFORMITY

  • Accepting goals and norms
  • Ex: Zoey Brooks(Zoey 101)
  • She has normal goals and reaches them in a normal way

INNOVATION

  • Accepting goals, but reject norms for achieving them
  • Ex: Walter White(Breaking Bad)
  • He has normal goals, but achieves them in an illegal way

RITUALISM

  • Rejecting goals, but accepting norms for achievement
  • Ex: Phil Dunphy(Modern Family)
  • He is happy where he is but still works hard.

RETREATISM

  • Reject goals and norms for achievement
  • Ex: Anng(Avatar: The Last Airbender)
  • He has different goals and achieves them in a unique way

REBELLION

  • Reject and replace goals and norms for achievement
  • Ex: Regina Mills(Once Upon A Time)
  • She destroys old norms and goals, and replaces them to benefit her

CONFLICT PERSPECTIVE

  • Competition and social inequity lead to deviance
  • Ex: Katniss Everdeen(The Hunger Games)
  • The pressure of competition causes her to do deviant actions

CONTROL THEORY

  • Deviance is a natural occurrence and conformity is seen as a result of social control
  • Ex: Michelle Tanner(Full House)
  • She isn't deviant since she is surrounded by a loving family that controls it

CULTURAL TRANSMISSION THEORY

  • Deviance is a learned behavior
  • Ex: Draco Malfoy(Harry Potter)
  • He grew up in a home known for deviance

DIFFERENTIAL ASSOCIATION

  • Proportion of deviant and non-deviant groups a person interacts with
  • Ex: Kipland Kinkel(The Killer at Thurston High)
  • He hangs out with deviant kids, but he also has a good family

LABELING THEORY

  • Focuses on how a person becomes identified as deviant
  • Ex: Olive Penderghast(Easy A)
  • She was treated like a slut, and she eventually played the part

PRIMARY DEVIANCE

  • First occurrence of deviant behavior 
  • Ex: Claire Standish(,The Breakfast Club)
  • She was a well behaved, but was influnced to do deviant acts in detention

SECONDARY DEVIANCE

  • Actions that occur as a result of you conforming to your new label
  • Ex: Beatrice Prior(Divergent)
  • Once she was labeled as Dauntless she started to do deviant acts

DEGRADATION CEREMONY

  • Process of labeling someone as deviant in a public setting
  • Ex: Elsa(Frozen)
  • People called her a monster or evil in the town square
