Origin
Dexters were first reported in Ireland in 1776 when a cattle owner with the last name of Dexter selected the smallest and smartest of his original herd and bred those to create the breed that we see today. There is no written history prior to then. Dexters are known as an ancient established breed meaning they have not been developed in recent times from a existing larger breed

REASON FOR BREEDING

  • Produce both meat and milk.
  • Easy to care for.
  • Not as susceptible to many diseases.
  • They are easy calving cattle.
  • Suitable for both small and large properties.

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Easy disposition and demeanor
  • Small in size
  • Highly intelligent
  • Long lifespan (can sometimes continue breeding until 14-15 years old)

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Known for their exceptional lean meat
  • Quality and coloring of meat is excellent

PROBLEMS

  • Chondrodysplasia
  • PHA (pulmonary hypoplasia with anasarca)
