WHAT IS DIABETES?

  • Can lead to kidney failure and heart disease.

HEALTHY CELLS

  • Food-> Sugar -> Blood stream
  • Glucose stimulates pancreas cells that release a signal (insulin) to liver, fat and muscle cells to lower blood sugar levels.

HEALTHY CELLS

  • When sugar levels drop, glucose is released by the pancreas when it receives a signal from insulin.

UNHEALTHY CELLS

  • Insulin production is controlled and affected by alpha and beta cells
  • Alpha cells increase glucagon production at the sight of low blood sugar
  • Beta cells increase insulin production at the sight of high blood sugar
