WHAT IS DIABETES INSIPIDUS

  • Diabetes insipidus effects the kidneys
  • Frequently results in excessive thirst and urination
  • The kidneys can't do their job of conserving water.
  • It can also occur when the kidneys don't respond correctly to the hormone

SYMPTOMS

  • Excessive urination
  • Dehydration
  • Extreme thirst

  • Lethargy
  • Irritability
  • Unexplained weakness
  • Muscle pain

CAUSES

  • Stemming from problems with the (adh)
  • Adh- anti diuretic hormone is produced in the brains hypothalamus
  • Which is stored in the pituitary gland
  • Release of the adh causes kidneys to hold on to water
  • Which makes urine more concentrated

TREATMENT

  • Synthetic hormone desmopressin
  • Mild cases of central insipidus can increase fluid intake
  • Nephrogenic diabetics can change to a low salt diet
  • Prescribe hydrochlothiazide which is a diuretic
  • Which in some cases can reduce urine output
