DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

WHAT DO THEY DO?

  • use high frequency sound waves to produce an image of the patient's body
  • use a device called a transducer
  • have extensive, direct patient contact
  • interact compassionately/effectively with all patients

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • obtain and record an accurate patient history
  • obtain diagnostic images of the patient
  • analyze technical information
  • provide an oral or written summary of the technical findings accurately
  • must be knowledgeable about possible exposure to blood and body fluids

MORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • assist in electronic and clerical scheduling, and record keeping
  • assist in computerized image archiving
  • may also have managerial or supervisory responsibilities

On average, a diagnostic medical sonographer earns $29.63 per hour and a median annual salary of $78,520.

Training is offered by hospitals, colleges and vocational schools. However, most employers prefer job applicants who have completed a formal training program at a college or university. Students take courses in physics, anatomy, physiology, medical ethics and patient care during their bachelor, or associate's, degree programs.
