WHO ARE THEY?

  • Merriweather Lewis and William Clark
  • Both former solders from Virginia
  • Jefferson chooses lewis ,who pick clark

GOALS OF THE EXPEDITION

  • Study plants animals and geography
  • Check for profit for America
  • Bring messages of friendship

Lewis and Clark leave St. Louis in may of 1804

  • Travel along the Missouri River with "crops of discovery"
  • 35-50 men

The only casualty in the entire trip was Sargent Charles Floyd ,who died of sickness .

Lewis and Clark met many Indians tribes along the way including the famous Lakota, or Teton Indians in central South Dakota

SPENT THE WINTER OF 1804 IN MANDAN INDIAN VILLAGE

  • They were concerned about how they would make it through the Rocky Mountains
  • They met a Shoshone Indian women named Sacajawea who was from the Rockies

Sacajawea and her infant son ,pomp agreed to be guides for Lewis and Clark on the their journey through the Rockies and to the pacific.

LEMHI PASS AUGUST 1805

  • No river leading through the Rockies
  • Continental Divide

The new tribe teaches lewis and Clark to make canoes form logs to speed down the snake and Colombia rivers toward the ocean.

JULY 1806

  • First battle in the whole trip
  • 2 black feet warriors are killed
