PROPERTIES/CHARACTERISTICS

  • Streak: white
  • Color: steel gray, white, blue, yellow, etc.
  • Crystal system: isometric
  • Transparency: transparent to opaque
  • Specific gravity: 3.1-3.53

  • Hardness: hardest known natural material on Earth
  • Luster: adamantine, rough stones have a greasy luster.
  • Cleavage: 1, all sides - octahedral
  • Fracture: conchoidal
  • Tenacity: brittle

  • Varieties: chocolate diamond, pink diamond, champagne diamond, etc.
  • Other identifying marks: has a cold feel and commonly fluorescent in shortwave ultraviolet light

USES

  • Diamond membranes are durable, resistant heat, and transparent, making them highly useful.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

  • Discovery: diamonds were discovered in India in 4th centuryB.C.
  • Historical significance: Diamonds were believed to have been used as a healing stone.
