THE OIL WARS

The discovery of oil in Texas in 1901 electrified the entire nation and changed Texas forever.

INVENTOR OF SPINDLETOP: ANTHONY F. LUCAS

Lucas hits the jackpot with the oil rig in 1901 when it spewed about 70,000 barrels a day.

DESDEMONA DURING THE BOOM

The oil often overflowed their tanks, polluting streams and creeks and fouling the air.

COMMON CARRIERS

Large strikes in 1918 and 1925 caused a huge boom, making 20,000 people move to Burkburnett.

BLOOD OF WAR, BLOOD OF PEACE

In 1919, 22 million barrels of oil flowed from wells in Eastland County.

THE GROWING CRISIS

States began to look for a way to share the property and be able to share amongst as a community.

Vast amounts of oil was being wasted, and prices of $3 a barrel became mere pennies.

HOT OIL: EAST TEXAS UNDER MARTIAL LAW

The Railroad Commission issued a new order limiting production to 400,000 barrels a day.
