WHAT WAS THE BERLIN WALL?

  • A concrete barrier circling West Berlin
  • Built in 1961
  • Its purpose was to cut off West Berlin from East Germany
  • Stopped the massive migration from East Germany to West Germany

IMPACTS

  • Separated families
  • Prison
  • Deaths

EASTERN POINT OF VIEW

  • Life was a lot better in the west
  • Leaving East Berlin for West Berlin was literally impossible
  • Their freedoms were limited

WESTERN POINT OF VIEW

  • Their economy was rising drastically
  • They were able to travel
  • Plenty of materials for everyone
  • They tried to help East Berliners over the wall, but a lot got caught
  • They hated the wall just as much as the East Berliners did

SEPTEMBER 1989

  • A string of protest demonstrations broke out all over East Germany
  • This was the start of The Peaceful Revolution
  • The first protest started onn September 4 in Lepizig

OCTOBER 1989

  • October 9 - Leipzig's protesters took to the streets under the banner "We are the people!"
  • The military surrounded the demonstrators, but did not take action
  • Honecker's resignation

NOVEMBER 1989

  • By November the protests had increased significantly
  • The Eastern Germans were forced to open new border crossings
  • Germans were allowed to cross from the East to the West
  • The guards became more tolearting
  • Eventually they allowed illegal border crossings through holes in the wall

NOVEMBER 1989

  • On November 4 about 1 million people protest in East Berlin
  • On November 4 The Berlin Wall falls
