PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

REBEKAH BENTON & KATJA MONSERRAT

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?

  • The function of the digestive system is digestion and absorption.
  • The system breaks down food into small molecules, which are then absorbed into the body.

THE DIGESTIVE TRACT INCLUDES

MOUTH, PHAYNX, ESOPHAGUS, STOMACH, SMALL & LARGE INTESTINE

DIGESTIVE TRACT

  • The mouth is the begging of the digestive tract, breaks food into pieces more easily digested.
  • The Phaynx is referred to as the throat; its muscular walls function in the process of swallowing.

DIGESTIVE TRACT

  • The esophagus has the one important job of carrying foods, liquids, and saliva from mouth to stomach.
  • The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that digest food. The stomach muscles contract periodically.

DIGESTIVE TRACT

  • The small intestine is the part of the intestines where 90% of digestion and absorption of food(minerals and a nutrients)occurs.
  • The large intestine is where the other 10% takes place. It absorbs water and transmits the useless waste from the body.

THE ACCESSORY ORGANS INCLUDE

TEETH, TONGUE, SALIVARY GLANDS, LIVER, GALLBLADDER, PANCREAS

ACCESSORY ORGANS

  • The teeth, tongue and salivary glands work together in the digestive system. During chewing the salivary glands in the mouth secrete saliva; this moistens food to help break it down more making it easier to swallow.

ACCESSORY ORGANS

  • The liver's mani function in the digestive system is to process the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Bile from the liver helps digest fat.
  • The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile when its not being used for digestion.

ACCESSORY ORGANS

  • The pancreas has an endocrine function because it releases juices into ducts. Enzymes, are secreted by the pancreas into the small intestine. There, it continues breaking down food that has left the stomach.

Importance: Without the digestive system, we
wouldn't be able to enjoy our favorite foods and drink
