There are many different kinds of systems in your body. One of them is the digestive system. The digestive system breaks up all the food and sends it all over the body! All the extras turn into pee or poo.
As the food goes into your mouth it is partly broken up by the grinding and chewing of your teeth. The chemical action of the salivary enzymes enters the mouth and works with the tongue to roll the food small enough for the oesophagus to carry it down into the stomach.
As the rolled up piece of food enters the acidity, wet sack, the mucus lining is slipped on the stomach, to stop all the acids from wrecking your stomach. The acid churns the food and bathes it in extremely strong acid.
After leaving the stomach it's pushed into the small intestines. First it enters the duodenum, jejunum and then the ileum. If it hasn't already been squeezed out through tiny holes throughout the small intestine, it continues its journey through to the large intestines.
The large intestine goes around the small intestine. While travelling through the larger intestine, the food turns into hard brown tubes called poo! At the other end of the big intestine the poo waits until your next toilet break to escape the body through your anus.
Now you know how your food goes down the digestive system. Next time you eat, think about the food going down and where your last meal will be in your body.
