What is a Digital Footprint?

A trail that you leave behind online that everyone can see.

Pros of Digital Footprints

  • Helps track and locate criminals, as well as finding evidence.
  • Helps in finding missing people.
  • Lets the Paramedics, Police and Firemen find the emergency locations.

Cons of the Digital Footprint

  • Strangers can access your location and the places you visit.
  • Internet hackers can access your personal information For example, your banking passwords, credit card information and online profiles.
  • People can gain access to your online profiles, meaning they can pose as you online. By "becoming you" they now have access to all your contacts an can find out information about your friends and family such as, where they live and there personal information. You are not the only one at risk.

An example of leaving a negative Digital Footprint: Sarah logs into her computer and does a little online shopping. Sarah leaves and forgets to sign out, she doesn't think much of it considering she is in the comfort of her own home. She left all of her personal information online and rushed into town to buy some groceries last minute. Little did she know someone hacked her computer and took her money using the information that was left on the computer. Now when Sarah goes to buy groceries or anything for that matter she will find out there is no money on her credit card, all because she didn't log out of one website.

Be careful what Digital Footprint you leave behind!

Make sure to delete all your website history after each use.
