Digital Literacy

School Plan 

Literacy Goals

  • Students can find and use appropriate/credible sources
  • Students actively participate in online communities
  • Students can use different types of media to create content and communicate information

Tracking Progress

  • Teachers will review goals at monthly staff meetings and engage in discussions to analyze progress
  • Teachers will share observations, advantages, and hurdles
  • Students will be made aware of goals and self assess their ability to meet them, as well as growth throughout the school year.

Accessing Digital Literacy

  • students will use 1-to-1 devices to access media online
  • Some of apps/programs included will be: Pearson Successnet, khan academy, brainpop, moodle, ted-ed, powtoons, thinglink, blogster, kahoot, edpuzzle

Data used

  • accuracy in student selection of resources
  • amount of time spent in online communities by students
  • Quality of student created materials
  • student test scores (on assessments that require media literacies- PARCC)

Curriculum Differences

  • Students will All have access to 1-to-1 computers at school and at home
  • teachers will be required to incorporate different types of texts and media (books, online articles, videos, advertisements)
  • Students will receive direct instruction about analyzing the credibility of sources, as well as author, purpose)
  • students will use different tools to create products for assessment and show mastery

know your role: Students

  • Engage in activities at school and at home that help to build the digital literacy skills of: analyzing, problem solving, critical thinking, collaborating, creating, and communicating

know your role:Parents

  • Parents: Encourage students to involve you in their learning. attempt to learn new media skills in conjunction with your child!

Know your ROle: Teachers

  • learn new digital tools and try them in your classroom! ENcourage student participation and model digital citizenship for students. include new media literacies in your daily lessons to foster student growth in that area.

Know your role: Administration

  • communicate with parents and teachers about changes. Be open minded and encourage students and teachers to think outside the box! Offer support to teachers who may need extra help.

Reading and Writing

  • Digital and Non-digital reading and writing should share an equal role in the classroom. Teachers should strive to use lessons that incorporate the use of both digital and non digital texts. they should work to cultivate skills required for reading offline texts to those online, but also to advance them by modeling the additional skills needed for online texts

Support for struggling readers

  • select texts appropriate for students ability levels
  • model literacy skills for students
  • provide extra practice with digital texts
  • anticipate learning gaps and work to fill them

Technology to support teachers

  • teachers can use google docs to upload and share lesson ideas
  • teachers can use wiki (created by rising star team) to access video tutorials on new technology to use in their classrooms
  • provide pd at staff functions on ways to cultivate digital literacies

Measures for Success

  • allow parents, teachers, and students to openly communicate about questions, concerns, ideas.
  • work closely with district technology team for support
