THE CELL AS A BUSINESS

THE NUCLEUS

THE CONTROL CENTER
The nucleus is similar to a boss or control center because it has authority over the rest of the cell, ie. Business. The nucleus sends out commands much like that of the boss. It also stores DNA or information for the cell. The boss of a company would have all the business records stored.

CENTRAL VACUOLE

THE BREAK ROOM
This is the place where materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates are stored. Plant cells have a central vacuole that is full of fluids. This is related to a break room because it is the place where a lot of workers eat. Water, salt, proteins, and carbohydrates are in our food.

VESICLE

THE INTERNS
Vesicles are similar to interns who bring workers food and drinks. In cells vesicles organize materials and transports them to different organelles in the cell. Interns assist the employees and bring them things that they may need for the future.

CYTOPLASM

CUBICLES
The nucleus or boss, works in his own office, however, the employees work in cubicles, or the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is all the room outside of the nucleus. The cubicles are all the space outside of the boss's office.

CYTOSKELETON

THE RECEPTIONIST
The cytoskeleton acts as the receptionist, taking messages and delivering them to different parts of the cell or business. In a cell they transport materials to different parts of the cell much like a receptionist transports messages to different people and departments of the business.

RIBOSOMES

EMPLOYEES
Ribosomes act like employees producing protein or work for the company. Employees produce different documents, spreadsheets, and projects for the company. This is the same way that a ribosome produces proteins to fuel a cell.

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

THE COPY ROOM
The Endoplasmic Reticulum is similar to a copy room. This is the place where people make copies of a document and assemble it together. In a cell rough ER is the part of the cell that has ribosomes on it. Smooth ER holds enzymes that are specialized to perform tasks. In a copy room the rough ER is the employees printing papers. The smooth ER is organizing and stapling the documents.

Ribosomes = employees

GOLGI APPARATUS

THE MAIL ROOM
The Golgi apparatus of a cell sorts, modifies, and packages proteins and other materials before they are shipped out to a new location. This functions like a mail room where documents and packages are shipped. It goes through an assistant first to be modified and then goes to the mail room to be packaged and sorted.

MITOCHONDRIA

THE FUNDS
The mitochondria powers the plant and business. In plants it processes the food and energy from the sun and then turns it into glucose in a process called photosynthesis. This is in the same way that the funding for a business powers all the work that is produced. Without the energy in a plant the plant will die. In a company without money there is no business.

CHLOROPLASTS

THE ELECTRICIAN
In order for a business to run, especially at night, there must be electricity. This allows for computers and other electronics to function and for light and elevators. In a plant the chloroplasts are the solar panels. They take all the energy they can from the sun and use it to their advantage.

CELL MEMBRANE

THE SECURITY
The cell membranes duty in a cell is to control what enters and exits the cell. This is the same as the security system which keeps intruders out and allows employees in.

CELL WALL

THE BUILDING
Most companies are housed in structurally sound buildings, which keeps the workers safe. The cell wall serves this purpose in a cell, providing rigid structure and support.
