3.2/3.3 Vocabulary

Mina Flores IB Biology

Diploid

(of a cell or nucleus) containing two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent.

Haploid

A cell or an organism having half of the number of chromosomes in somatic cells.

Homologous

The existence of shared ancestry between a pair of structures or genes in different species.

chromosome

A structure within the cell that bears the genetic material as a thread linear strand of DNA in cells.

Autosomes

Any chromosome not considered a sex chromosome, or is not involved in sex determination.

Sex Chromosomes

A type of chromosome in the genome that is involved in the determination of the sex as well as the development of sexual characteristics

Trisomy

abnormal condition where there are three copies, in stead of two, of a particular chromosome within the cell.

Monosomy

Is a rare chromosomal disorder in which there is deletion of a portion of chromosome 9.

Karyogram

The complete set of chromosomes of a cell or organism.

Karyotype

The characterizations of the chromosome compliment of a species.

Plasmid

Small extra DNA molecules found in prokaryote cells.

Autoradiograhy

Visualize and measure DNA molecules.

Crossing Over

A process occurring during meiosis wherein two chromosomes pair up and exchange segments of their genetic material.

Somatic Cell

All cells in the body except sperm cells and egg cells.

Gamete

A reproductive cell or sex cell that contains the haploid set of chromosomes.

Non-Disjuntcion

The failure of sister chromatids to separate during and after mitosis.

Meiosis

The process by which one diploid eukaryotic cell divides to generate four haploid cells

Amniocentesis

a procedure used to diagnose fetal defects in the early second trimester of pregnancy

Chorionic Villus Sampling

prenatal diagnosis to determine genetic abnormalities in the fetus.
